Biografie Christel Schüppenhauer

Born in Idar-Oberstein, school, apprenticeship (industrial clerk), commercial management of her parents' company. Marriage, 2 daughters, moves to Saarbrücken, Lübeck, Essen, jobs in architectural offices, building a house, divorce. Since the end of the 1960s until today, numerous art exploration trips to Western and Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Brazil, USA, Yemen, China, Japan, Mali, Cuba, Australia etc..

Consequential acquaintance with the Czechoslovak avant-garde in 1969 in Prague as the basis for:

1980

Founding of the Pragxis Gallery in Essen-Kettwig with a focus on international concrete/visual poetry, concrete and conceptual art with the involvement of Eastern European artists. Since the beginning, organisation of thematic exhibition projects in the gallery and outside in cooperation with museums and institutions at home and abroad, publication of catalogues and editions in the gallery's own publishing house.

1985

Move as Galerie Christel Schüppenhauer to Essen, Bismarckstr. 53, opposite the Museum Folkwang and opening of RAUM II in Hofterbergstraße, a parallel project space for young experimental art and performance. First exhibition with Ben Vautier and increased involvement with Fluxus.

1986/87

First "art in public space" project with the sculpture by Timm Ulrichs, UMRAUM, executed in 1987 in Essen-Rüttenscheid.

1987

The Schüppenhauer Gallery moves to Engelbertstr. 30 in Cologne. Opening of the Cologne location with Ben Vautier and expansion of the focus with Fluxus.

1993

Move to the gallery building at Bismarckstr. 60 in the Belgian Quarter.

1997

Move to the more spacious rooms in Bismarckstr. 70 on 2 floors and establishment of the parallel "Studio" for young experimental art and performance.

2006

Opening of the 2nd gallery in Cologne at Luxemburger Str. 345.

2007

Closure of the rooms at Bismarckstr. 70 and relocation of the gallery to Luxemburger Str. 345 in Cologne.

2012

Farewell to the operational gallery and exhibition business and renaming to schüppenhauer art+projects. Use of the location Luxemburger Str. 345 as a project office with temporary exhibition space. Concentration on the development and realisation of exhibition projects (intermedial art/fluxus) for institutions as well as the organisation and realisation of participations in exhibitions by the gallery's longstanding artists.

31.12.2020

Abandonment of the location at Luxemburger Str. 345 and relocation of the project office to Luxemburger Str. 329, continuation of the above-mentioned activities. Transfer of the gallery archive to ZADIK.

Since 1980 intensive cooperation with galleries, collectors, institutions and museums in Europe and the USA, since 1985 regular participation in fairs such as Art Cologne, Art Frankfurt, ARCO Madrid, FIAC Paris, Art Brussels etc.
